Spying Doesn’t Pay — Unless You’re Really Good At It

Earlier this month, the Justice Department announced the arrest of Ron Hansen, a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer. Hansen is accused of receiving at least $800,000 from Chinese sources in exchange for information he learned from “military and intelligence conferences in the U.S.” and for sensitive technology that the U.S. government had banned from being shared with China.

A 911 call was made at 11:09 p.m. on October 15, 2015, to report a battery incident involving a relatively minor use of force. Police arrived nearly a half-hour later, found no evidence of a crime having occurred, and went on their way.

In an October 2015 address to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, FBI Director James Comey spoke of an urgent “data shortage” that was making it difficult for him to do his job. Addressing a room of law enforcement executives, Comey said, pointedly, “How can we address a rise in violent crime without good information? And without information every single conversation in this country about policing and reform and justice is uninformed.”

Vehicle burglaries have doubled in 2019, and juveniles make up the majority of those arrested for those crimes, Asher wrote. Police have made 88 arrests of juveniles age 14 to 16 for vehicle burglaries; the same number of arrests for all other age groups...
